Roots singer Doniki is dead
Roots singer Doniki, who recorded as a solo act and with deejay Steady Ranks, has died.
His partner, Lisa Maria Mitchell (known in dancehall circles as Lisa Dainjah), told the Jamaica Observer that he died Sunday while on the way to hospital for treatment.
She said the 49-year-old Doniki had been ill for the past three weeks. He had long-standing smoking and hypertension problems.
Doniki (born Donald Ashman Willis) was originally from music-rich Trench Town, but grew up in Waterhouse, another Kingston community with a strong music heritage.
Many of his recordings, such as Don’t Mix With The Devil and Trod On, were done with Steady Ranks.
He also recorded two albums.
Doniki is survived by two children, nine sisters (including model Nadine Willis) and four brothers.
